Fool me once... I had just moved to the neighborhood (lower Washington Heights) in 2000 and was excited to have a terrace and a view of the river and bridge. So I had a party for "OpSail2000" and we just waited and waited and finally reality hit around 2:30pm. Over the next few days (pre social media age it was) there were dozens of opinon pieces, letters to the editor and artlcles interviewing disappointed/outraged uptowners and Jerseyites and the event was renamed "FLOPSail2000.' Nobody could confirm the problem then either (though their was suspicison that Bill Clinton's late arrival at the starting line caused such a delay they turned around early.) The Coast Guard claimed there had never been a plan to go to the bridge, others theorized that the river's narrowing by the bridge and tidal patterns and the Palisades cliffs cutting off wind were responsible though neighbors who were here for the 1970s and 1980s remember no history of problems then. This time I had enogh sense NOT to throw a party and have renamed the event FAIL4th2026. Maybe on the remote chance I live to an absurdly old age they will have things together enough that as a very, very, VERY (extremely) old woman, I will be able to see the ships sail past for the Tricentennial. Probably not (on both counts).
Dontcha love that he showed the $14 tag? Vicarious thrill for the rest of us. Great find. Perfect customer. So many of us ‘downsizing’ hope for our treasures to go to a good home. This is an outstanding outcome!
Just wanted to comment that last night on TCM was a John Garfield movie, Force of Evil, that ends up at the Little Red Lighthouse. He finds his brothers body there where it was dumped by the mob. You can see how undeveloped it was in the 1940s. Today I’m remembering 50 years ago, 1976, watching the Tall ships up the Hudson from someone’s balcony on Riverside Drive. It was thrilling.

What a shame. All due respect to Ken Burns there is nothing like seeing them in person, sails out in the sun. It’s thrilling and time travel.
I saw Ironsides in Boston in high school and was amazed at how tiny the beds were, maybe 4-5’ long? I know sailors could be very young and extremely malnourished but wow, were they expected to sleep like pretzels too? Their descendants went into airplane design I guess…
A bit of a whine to complain about your poor planning… Just like many other of the problems in America, people choose to blame anyone but themselves and in this case you pick the government… Lol…. God forbid somebody take ownership for once, I’d imagine then they would not feel the need to complain online. I couldn’t imagine living a life where I feel so powerless against an imaginary enemy like this.

Nessie has been on Rt. 390 on the way to Skytop for years. Usually, there's a baby one too.
